内容简介 This book contains 87 interviews reflecting a wide range of personal experiences between 1991 and 2008. The interviewees come from different occupations and different places. Their stories present the real lives of Chinese people since the 1990s. In the course of the great social transformation brought about by reform and opening up, in their pursuit of well-off lives the Chinese people have striven to maintain their traditional virtues of a simple lifestyle and unselfishness. They have clung to their traditional culture while absorbing new and foreign cultural sustenance. All the interviewees related their experiences, joys, sorrows, challenges, grievances and hopes in a candid way.

序言 Publisher'S Foreword
If we wanted a phrase associated with our better lives today, manypeople would mention“reform and opening up,”a policy initiated inChina in 1 978.It was this policy that helped the Chinese people to get ridof poverty and start to become more well-off.And it WaS this policy thathelped China open its long-closed door to the outside world and get evencloser to it.
Over the past 30 years,China has undergone world-shaking changeswhile advancing its reform and opening up deeply and extensively. Now,newly built high-rises,bridges,highways and railways are to be seeneverywhere;at the same time, overseas advanced equipment, technologyand management modes have been introduced into China.During the30 years of reform and opening up,what has happened to our lives andthinking? In 2008,the 30th anniversary of China’S reforill and openingup,we traced this period of history by publishing the two-volume ChineseLife: Bitter-Sweet Pclrtraits series.By means of interviews, the two bookspotray the lives of a diversity of Chinese people who experienced theseepoch-making changes.
Chinese Life:Bitter-Sweet Portraits(1991-2008)contains 87interviews reflecting a wide range of personal experiences between 1991and 2008,based on 150 interviews eonducted from the 1990s to 2008.Theinterviewees come from different occupations and difierent places.Theyinclude a jazz player in Heilongjiang Province,a rock-and-roll drummerin Tibet,an elderly fruit farmer in Shanxi Province,a Beijing boss just 14years old,a retired 68.year-old man who ventured alone in Africa,a collegestudent who has adopted a younger sister despite poverty and hardship, anda woman entrepreneur who ranked No.1 on Hurun China Rich List.

“I'm ready to do all I fallfor my mo~er so long as she gallrecord.”
Iiu Ting, born in 1986,had been a contented boy until he turned age 13when his mother was diagnosed with uremia. This added to the misery of thethree-member family and shattered his dream of becoming a musician. His fatherworked at a state-owned factory and his mother WaS a dressmaker in ShuanglinTown of Huzhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province.Although the parents didnot earnhighincome, thefamilyrived adecent,well-offlife.Andtheyhadboughtan apartmentoftheirown severalyearsbefore.
Nowinorderto cureLiu'smother, thefamily spent alltheir savings and owedan enormous debttotheir relativesandfriends.Three years ago,Liu'sfamily soldthe 100-square-meterapartmenttheyhadboughtinorderto repaythedebt.ThenLiu's fatherwas laid off from the factory and left home to find a iob elsewhereinChina.ButLiu'sfatherdidnot returnhomebythe endoftheyear.
I have neither the time nor the mood to complain about myfather,as I have to take care of my mother in my spare time.
Usually I rush home after sch001 to buy the vegetables.cookthe meals,do the washing, and decoct the mecinal herbs for mymother.Sometimes I take her to hospital for a medical check-upand treatment.
I was fond of and good at art and could play a couple of musical instruments when I was very young.I dreamed of studyingat a noted conservatory and becoming a musician when I grew up.
