  Part A

  Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear 2 passages in English. After you have heard each sentence or paragraph, interpret it into Chinese. Start interpreting at the signal…and stop it at the signal…You may take notes while you are listening. Remember you will hear the passages only once. Now let us begin Part A with the first passage.

  Passage 1:

  Most Australians have daily contact with the mass communications media. Research shows Australians read more newspapers per head of population than any other nationality. //

  As a result, newspapers in the nation's major and capital cities have large circulation figures. In Australia, most major newspapers are owned by a small group of proprietors. //

  Australia has a well-developed radio and television industry. Radio and television broadcasting services are provided by national, commercial, multicultural and public organizations. //

  The Australian Broadcasting Company's radio and television programs cover news and current affairs, information, children and education, arts, religion, drama, music, light entertainment, documentaries and sports.

  Passage 2:

  Britain was the first highly industrialized country and for a long time it led the world in industrial production. In 1870 Britain made one third of all the world's manufactured goods. //

  From about 1870, however, Britain began to lose its lead. Today Britain produces 11% of the world's exported manufactured goods. Britain needs to expo~ to pay for all the foods it needs. //

  The country is the fifth most densely populated in the world. It has a population of 59 million people on a number of islands. //

  There just is not enough room to grow food for all these people even though British agriculture is one of the most mechanized and most advanced in the world.

  Passage 1

  中国的扶贫开发主要依靠自己的力量,同时我们也重视与国际社会在扶贫领域方面的交流与合作。//

  我们认为,根据开展扶贫领域方面的国际交流与合作,有利于加快解决本国贫困人口的温饱问题。//

  这样做,也有助于通过借鉴国际社会多年来积累的扶贫经验,提高中国扶贫开发的整体水平。//

  自20世纪90年代以来,我们积极扩大与国际组织在扶贫领域的合作,并且取得了明显的进展。

  The Chinese government carries out its aid-the-poor program mainly by its own efforts, at the same time, we also pay attention to exchange and cooperation with the international community in this sphere of endeavor. //

  We believe that promoting such international exchange and cooperation (in the realm of aid-the-poor) will help speed up the solving of the food and clothing problem of a country's own poor population. //

  In doing so, it will also help raise the general level of China's aid-the-poor work by learning from the international community its long years of experience in aiding the poor. //

  Since the 1990s, we have actively widened / expanded our cooperation with international organizations (in the realm of aid-the-poor) and made obvious progress.

  Passage 2:

  当今发展中国家,经济发展和环境保护之间的矛盾越来越突出。中国正面临着发展经济与保护环境的双重任务。//

  中国在全面推进现代化的过程中,将实现经济持续发展视为一项重要战略,同时将环境保护视为一项基本国策。//

  我们在全国范围内开展污染防治工作和生态环境保护活动,综合整治城市环境。//

  此外,我们在人民中宣传环保知识。实践证明,我们协调经济发展与环境保护两者之间关系的做法是行之有效的。

  The disparity between economic development and environmental protection is becoming increasingly acute in today's developing countries. China is confronted with the dual mission of developing the economy and protecting the environment. //

  China has, in the process of promoting its overall modernization program / drive, regarded the realization of sustained economic development as an important strategy, and meanwhile made environmental protection its basic national policy. //

  We have carried out throughout the country campaigns for pollution prevention and treatment as well as ecological environmental protection, focusing on preventing and controlling industrial pollution and comprehensively working on the improvement of the urban environment. //

  On top of that, we have communicated to our people environmental protection knowledge to raise their awareness of environmental ethics. These practices have shown China's effective endeavor in striking a balance between economic development and environmental protection.
