Passage 1:
The United States and China are two great nations, But we must be realistic about our relationship, frankly acknowledging the fundamental differences in ideology and systems between our two societies. //
Yes, we may live at nearly opposite ends of the world. We may be distinctly different in languages, customs, and political beliefs; but on many vital questions of our time there is little distance between the American and Chinese people. //
Indeed, I believe if we were to ask citizens all over this world what they desire most for their children, their answer would likely be the same: We want a better life. //
Their dreams represent mankind's deepest aspirations for security and personal fulfillment. And helping them make their dreams come true is what our jobs are all about. This is exactly what is happening in China today.

Good morning, Ladies and gentlemen! I am so pleased to be here with all of you. My purpose today is to give a "foreigner's view" of China as a site or market for capital investment. //
Having worked to promote trade and investment ties between my country and China for more than 10 years, I am well aware of the major changes that have taken place in China since the signing of Shanghai Communiqué in 1972. //
And further, I know how much China has accomplished ever since 1978 to create a climate favorable to foreign investment, for example, new laws, new regulations, and tax incentives. //
But congratulation for a job well done is not the subject of my speech today. What I would like to talk here is China's efforts to promote foreign investment, in particular, foreign investment in the western regions of China.

In the past two decades of reforming and opening to the outside world, China has witnessed a fast booming in economy, a great increase in social productivity, a constant improvement in people's life and a big reduction in poverty population. //
Although the Chinese people have every reason to take delight in the past achievements, they can not be too proud of themselves. China will remain a developing country in a quite long period of time in the future. //
Now, it is the common understanding of the Chinese people that they should work more diligently, continue to carry out the principle of hard struggle and learn from the developed countries. //
China tries to raise the people's living standard to a well-off level in less than 50 years. Therefore, the future essential task is to promote economy.
Passage 2:
首先，我感谢本届大会组委会的盛情邀请，使我有机会在这里与各位见面，探讨世界经济发展的重大问题。// 今年以来，中国经济持续快速健康发展，全年增长速度有望保持7%以上。中国的发展也有利于世界经济的复苏。//

Let me begin by thanking the Organizing Committee of the APEC CEO summit for its gracious invitation, which gives me this opportunity to meet all of you here and discuss with you some of the critical issues concerning world economic development. //
China's economy has maintained a sustained rapid and sound growth since the beginning of the year. This year's growth rate is expected to be over 7 percent. China's development also serves / is instrumental / beneficial to the world economic recovery.
In the face of the current economic situation in the world, I think it is all the more necessary for the governments and business communities of APEC members to increase trust and cooperation as passengers in the same boat.
China's development and opening-up have already turned the country into one of the major global markets recognized by international business communities, a market that presents a great deal of opportunities for foreign goods and services.
