But the address at Gettysburg is the most widely quoted. // Since the speech was printed, almost every child of school age in the United States has to study and memorize it. // The speech was extremely short and simple. It had been composed by Abraham Lincoln on the train during his journey to Gettysburg, and it was written in pencil on the back of an envelope. // Some historians say that people were so moved by Lincoln’s words that they did not applaud. Instead, they responded with a profound and respectful silence. //
