Ten Letters: The Stories Americans Tell Their President

Every day, President Obama reads ten representative letters among the thousands he receives from citizens across the land. The letters come from people of all ages, walks of life, and political points of view. Some are heartbreaking, some angry, some hopeful. Indeed, Obama reads as many letters addressed “Dear Jackass” as “Dear Mr. President.” Eli Saslow, a young and rising star at the Washington Post, became fascinated by the power of these letters and set out to find the stories behind them.

Through the lens of ten letters to which Obama responded personally, this exceptionally relevant and poignant book explores those individual stories, taking an in-depth look at the misfortunes, needs, opinions, and, yes, anger over the current state of the country that inspired ten people to put pen to paper. Surprisingly, what also emerges from these affecting personal narratives is a story about the astounding endurance and optimism of the American people.

Ten Letters is an inspiring and important book about ordinary people and the issues they face every day—the very issues that are shaping America’s future. This is not an insider Washington book by any means, but a book for the times that tells the real American stories of today.

Eli Saslow's "Ten Letters" is a well-researched, inspiring read that examines the lives of ten ordinary Americans who felt the need to write to President Obama about their unique circumstances. Each of these writers were probably not expecting Obama to actually read their letters, even less so a response. Mr. Saslow examines the process by how regular American's letters are selected to appear on President Obama's desk. The ten letter-writers in "Ten Letters" are some of the people who have received a response from the President, and more than that in some instances. This book was an enlightening read into what motivates ordinary people to write a letter to the President of the United States, and how governmental policies are affecting these people.

Mr. Saslow does an admirable job keeping the partisan politics out of this book. The only complaint I have is that the chapter on health care reform does seem to consistently try to depict Republican lawmakers as the "bad guys." Overall, this book was a worthwhile, entertaining read that I believe will help readers have a better understanding of the challenges facing everyday Americans.

"Ten Letters" from all that mail is a monumental task. This book is a great compilation and minute sampling of the 20,000 purple folder letters/emails received by the White House daily. This book gives a great history of a long time tradition of writing letters to the President of the United States (POTUS). An 11-year old girl inspired Abraham Lincoln to grow a beard?

The book covers ten burning issues that affect our American culture, and each issue will educate you then guide you in forming or changing your perspectives about them. The most interesting letter of the ten was the one about a mom's lieutenant son serving in afghanistan. Read the book today to find out why.

President Obama is right in his belief that by sending an embossed note card bearing the presidential seal he could at least give the writer some temporary joy and relief. I say that because I wrote to him once and did receive a typewritten embossed card and of course I was shocked like all the recipients in this book. If you told anyone you wrote to the POTUS they will say good luck, or you don't think he is going to read that, do you?

Not only did I receive the signed embossed card but my thoughts and ideas were forwarded to another government agency, probably with a handwritten note saying "Can you please take care of this?" I say this because I did receive a letter from the government agency saying "Thank You," and that a copy of my letter to President Obama was forwarded to them for further response. Showing my "letter" to others left them in amazement and disbelief. Was it a form letter? Who cares, it was a response with action!

Unfortunately, I do find that getting a response from the President of the United States leading 400,000,000? Americans is a lot easier than getting a response from an agency/corporate CEO leading much less people being blocked by reality through HR staff. It is doubtful most CEOs will EVER see a letter from a ground level worker because the inner circle shields the boss from the thoughts and ideas of the "little people." It is their loss because they are only missing out on a lot of opinions that might make a huge difference defining their personal and professional leadership.

Sadly, people allow their political persuasion to rule their reading so this story of Obama requiring ten letters daily to be delivered for him to maintain contact with normal Americans and escape his bubble will not be read by all. It should. This is fascinating on many levels: the sadness of some of the stories which many Americans fortunately do not experience that is all too common for our less fortunate citizens, the anger at the "Man Cave Man" who ultimately receives an answer from his nemesis reaffirming his importance as an American and many, many more.

This story doesn't just touch on this very appropriate practice by Obama but touches on the history of letters delivered to all the Presidents. This in itself is fascinating particularly the two or three events that really spurred the growth of Presidential letter writing.

But at the core is a President trying to maintain his touch to common Americans just trying to survive in a tough environment. Great Americans with small stories to tell and teach us. Like the obstinate right wing Republican who beneath the surface is a compassionate caring teacher not at all like his hell fire politics. And maybe that's the power of this book: it's not as it seems, neither the President as viewed by his opponents or the citizens as viewed by their political view.

A great learning story I STRONGLY recommend and a very fast touching read.
