  TOEFL Essay Question:

Many parts of the world are losing important resources, such as forests, animals or clean water. Choose one resource that is disappearing and why it needs to be saved. Use specific reasons and examples (from your knowledge or experience) to support your opinion.

  Sample Essay (Jeenn Lee Hsieh):

As if losing forests and animals may not be bad enough, the world's clean water is disappearing at an alarming rate in many parts of the planet. Although it seems no immediate global crisis, the scarcity of freshwater may eventually drive human lives to danger. If the worse comes to the worst, this limited resource can be running out unless we use it effectively and share it peacefully.

On the one hand, the danger of water shortages is partly because of industrial pollution and partly because of excessive exploitation. As an illustration, water is gradually polluted in ponds, lakes, rivers and underground streams. Joining this destructive force are accelerating population, expanding agriculture, rapid economic development, and higher living standards. So much so, the issue is how to save water by using it effectively. Fortunately, however, water is known to be renewable if conserved on land and not flowing into the sea. It is common sense that seawater is not freshwater. At this point, we may imagine a thirsty sailor on the open sea, crying desperately "Water, water everywhere; not a drop to drink".

On the other hand, sharing water on the planet means maintaining the global peace, so to speak. Already there have been regional conflicts about freshwater. Accordingly, it is understandable that water needs to be saved, if only for peace's sake. Otherwise, as water becomes less, disputes will be heated. If and when things go to extremes, who can say that the next war will not be fought over water rather than politics or ideology or fuel? Signs of such risks have become increasingly obvious simply because owe do not do enough to conserve water but abuse it beyond limits and beyond repair.

It goes without saying that we cannot do without water since our lives are supported by it, therefore we had better use it wisely and share it in peace. To prevent water shortages, we cannot afford to take this gift from Nature for granted. In forcing this natural resource from heaven to do our foolish bidding, we might be heading ourselves for hell.
