It is obvious that people are living longer because they are reaching old age in better health. This phenomenon largely stems from public health efforts to improve living conditions and prevents diseases, as well as from improved medical interventions. Some researches, however, also link longevity to active living styles and positive feelings about life. They say that it is as simple as adopting the attitude: "Don't worry, be busy and be happy."

Investigations tend to indicate, on the one hand, that positive emotions help prolong lifespan. Barring accidental deaths or terminal diseases like cancer, it seems that those who decide to be happy have the great chance of remaining alive in healthy lives after 80 years old. It has also been suggested that positive emotions may contribute to a lower risk of coronary heart disease. Likewise, they may help slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones or improve sleep. On the contrary, people who are inclined to think negatively are being "worried to earlier death," so to speak.

On the other hand, being busy is not far away from being happy, it seems. For one thing, busy people are mostly popular. Popular people with a lot of friends and a loving family live longer lives, according to new studies. The constant interaction is not only beneficial psychologically but also directly strengthens people's physical health. If this is true, chances are that being socially and professionally active after retirement does more good than harm to aged men and women alike.

Much of the secret of longevity remains unclear. Probably the process of aging itself--including dementia and heart failure--is still happening at pretty much the same rate. The good news is that thinking positive and keeping busy may somehow make a difference about human deterioration. According to medical scientists, deterioration, instead of being stretched out, is being postponed. Since women are considered happier and busier than men, females often outlive males. Small wonder that, in terms of gender, the ratio of the number of people living over 100 years: six women to one man.
