  (4)过渡信号词:
表示并列: and, or, nor, either…or, not only…but also, not… but
举例:uniformed rangers, the most visible representatives of the service, not only offer park visitors a friendly wave, a helpful answer, or a thought-provoking history lesson, but also are skilled rescuers, firefighters and dedicated resource protection professionals.
表示文章层次顺序:first, second, third, in addition, furthermore, moreover, then, also
举例:many things about language are a mystery, and many will always remain so. but some things we do know.
first, we know that all human beings have a language of some sort.
second, there is no such thing as a primitive language.
a third thing we know about language is that all languages are perfectly adequate.
finally, we know that language changes.
  表示文章转折:but, though, however, yet, unfortunately
举例:a ride in a cable-car is one of the most exciting and enjoyable experiences a child can have. in switzerland, which is the home of the cable-car, it is used mostly to take tourists up the slop of a mountain, to a restaurant from which one can have a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding country, or to the top of a ski-run, from which, in winter, skiers glide down the snow-covered slope on skis. in singapore, however, the cable-car takes one from the summit of a hill on the main island to a low hill on sentosa, a resort island just off the southern coast.
表示对比:on the other hand, on the contrary, instead, in contrast, whereas
举例:the approach to teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only because it is informal, but also because there is not much emphasis on learning facts. instead, americans try to teach their children to think for themselves and to develop their own intellectual and creative abilities. students spend much time, learning how to use resource materials, libraries, statistics and computers. americans believe that if children are taught to reason well and to research well, they will be able to find whatever facts they need throughout the rest of their lives. knowing how to solve problems is considered more important than the accumulation of facts.
表示比较:similarly, equally, like, equally important, in the same way
举例:long bus rides are like television shows. they have a beginning, a middle, and an end --- with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. the commercials are unavoidable. they happen whether you want them or not. every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. “ buy super clean toothpaste.” “ drink good’n wet root beer.” “ fill up in pacific gas.” only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the tv set off, are you spared the unending cry of “ you need it! buy it now!”
表示例证:for example, for instance, a case in point is, say, such as, like
举例:the question is no mere academic one. the case, for example, with which people can change from working in the day to working at night is a question of growing importance in industry where automation calls insistently for round-the-clock working of machines.
表示原因: for, since, as, because, owing to, due to
举例:northern europeans are willing to pay a lot of money and put up with a lot of inconveniences for the SUN because they have so little of it. residents of cities like london, copenhagen, and amsterdam spend a lot of their winter in the dark because the days are so short and much of the rest of the year in the rain. this is the reason the mediterranean has always attracted them. every summer, more than 25 million people travel to mediterranean resorts and beaches for their vacation. they all come for the same reason: sun!
表示结果:therefore, accordingly, as a result, so, consequently, thus
举例:recently the department of planning of new york issued a report which laid bare a full scale of change of the city. in 1970, 18 percent of the city’s population was foreign-born. by 1995, the figure had risen to 33 percent, and another 20 percent were the us-born offsprings of immigrants. so immigrants and their children now form a majority of the city’s population.

  majority
  minority
表示让步: although, though, despite, in spite that, even though
举例:children under three are likely to protest at leaving their parents and show unhappiness. at the age of three or three and a half almost all children find the transition to nursery easy, and this is undoubtedly why more and more parents make use of child care at this time. the matter, then, is far from clear-cut, though experience indicates that early care is reasonable for infants.
表示总结:finally, in summary, to sum up, in conclusion, at last,in other words
举例:although the country’s trade deficit was more than £ 60 billion in 2006, uk’s largest in the postwar period, officials say the country has nothing to worry about. in fact, britain does have a world-class pharmaceutical industry, and it still makes a small sum from selling arms abroad. it also trades services - accountancy, insurance, banking and advertising. the government believes britain is on the cutting edge of the knowledge economy. after all, the country of shakespeare and wordsworth has a literary tradition of which to be proud. rock‘n’ roll is an english language medium, and there are billions to be made by their cutting-edge bands. in other words, the creative economy has plenty of strength to carry the british economy.

  (5)长句的结构信号词:对比较长的句子按句子的结构信号词去阅读也是理顺思路、把握脉络的方法之一。而主从复合句也通常是出题者提问的地方。

4)critical distance apparently is present wherever and whenever there is a flight reaction. "critical distance" includes the narrow zone separating flight distance from attack distance. a lion in a zoo will flee from an approaching man until it meets a barrier that it cannot overcome. if the man continues the approach, he soon penetrates the lion’s critical distance, at which point the cornered lion reverses direction7 and begins slowly to stalk the man.
  ② 宾语从句: 多由that引导,that可以省略。其他还有whether/if, wh-疑问词, how。阅读时,若想提高阅读速度,可忽略主句,只看从句。在文章中寻找discover, find, show, indicate, suggest, mean, report, believe,等词。

③ 同位语从句: 由that 引导,一般跟在名词(fact, news, idea, hope, report, opinion, order, question, belief, decision, proposal, suggestion, plan, conclusion, promise, etc.)后面,对其进行解释和说明。
  举例:
1)research teams have conducted studies that show beyond all reasonable doubt that tobacco smoking is associated with a shortened life expectancy.
2)findings published online this week by the proceedings of the national academy of sciences further support the theory that the brain organizes and stows memories formed during the day while the rest of the body is catching zzz’s.
3)some people have drawn the conclusion from bowlby’s work that children should not be subjected to day care before the age of three.
  ④ 定语从句:由三部分构成:先行词(名词或代词),关系词(关系代词和关系副词)和从句。关系代词主要包括who, which, that, whose, whom;关系副词有when, where, why等。
  举例:
1)the cable-car is really a carriage which hangs from a strong steel cable suspended in the air.
2)if the man continues the approach, he soon penetrates the lion’s critical distance, at which point the cornered lion reverses direction and begins slowly to stalk the man.
3)ceremonial bathing has existed for thousands of years and has many forms, one of which is the sauna.
4)long before the white man came to the america, the land belonged to the american indian nations. the nation of the cherokees lived in a place that is now the southeastern part of the united states.
  ⑤ 主语从句: 由that, whether/if, wh-疑问词, how等引导。重点看主语。

  it…that…
  it is…that…
  it was…that…
  举例:
1)what is surprising is that no one company dominates the industry. it seems that when people plan for a day as special to them as a wedding, they resist standardization.

  解题技巧:主要看文章的题目、首段、每段的首句以及最后一段
  举例:
income may be national income and personal income. whereas national income is defined as the total earned income of all the factors of production---namely, profits, interest, rent, wages and other compensation for labor, personal income may be defined as total money income received by individuals before personal taxes are paid. national income does not equal gnp because the factors of production do not receive payment for either capital consumption allowances or indirect business taxes, both of which are included in gnp. the money put aside for capital consumption is for replacement and thus is not counted as income. indirect taxes include sales taxes, property taxes and excise taxes that are paid by businesses directly to the government and so reduce the income left to pay for the factors of production. three-fourths of national income goes for wages, salaries and other forms of compensation to employees.

american has always been a land of beginnings. after europeans ‘discovered’ america in the fifteenth century, the mysterious new world became for many people a genuine hope of a new life, an escape from poverty and persecution, a chance to start again. (1)we can say that, as nation, america begins with that hope. when, however, does american literature begin?
american literature begins with american experiences. (2)long before the first colonists arrived, before christopher columbus, before the northmen who “found” america about the year 1,000, native americans lived here. (3)each tribe’s literature was tightly woven into the fabric of daily life and reflected the unmistakably american experience of lining with the land. another kind of experience, one filled with fear and excitement, found its expression in the reports that columbus and other explorers sent home in spain, french and english. in addition, the journals of the people who lived and died in the new england wilderness3 tell unforgettable tales of hard and sometimes heartbreaking experiences of those early years.
(4)experience, then, is the key to early american literature. the new world provided a great variety of experiences, and these experiences demanded a wide variety of expressions by an even wider variety of early american writers. these writers included john smith, who spent only two-and-a-half years on the american continent. (5)they included jonathan edwards and william byrd, who thought of themselves as british subjects, never suspecting a revolution that would create a united states of america with a literature of its own. american indians, explorers, puritan ministers, frontier wives, plantation owner - they are all the creators of the first american literature.

obesity can spread from person to person, much like a virus, researchers are reporting today. when one person gains weight, close friends tend to gain weight, too.

  fatness
their study, published in the new england journal of medicine, involved a detailed analysis of a large social network of 12,067 people who had been closely followed for 32 years, from 1971 to 2003.
the investigators knew who was friends with whom as well as who was a spouse or sibling or neighbor, and they knew how much each person weighed at various times over three decades. that let them reconstruct what happened over the years as individuals became obese. did their friends also become obese? did family members ? or neighbors?
(1)the answer, the researchers report, was that people were most likely to become obese when a friend became obese. that increased a person’s chances of becoming obese by 57%. there was no effect when a neighbor gained or lost weight, however, and (2)family members had less influence than friends.
(2)it did not even matter if the friend was hundreds of miles away, the influence remained. and the greatest influence of all was between close mutual friends. there, if one became obese, the other had a 171% increased chance of becoming obese, too.
the same effect seemed to occur for weight loss, the investigators say. but since most people were gaining, not losing, over the 32 years, the result was, on average, that people grew fatter.
dr. nicholas a. christakis, a physician and professor of medical sociology at harvard medical school and a principal investigator in the new study, said one explanation was that (3)friends affects each others’ perception of fatness. when a close friend becomes obese, obesity may not look so bad.
“you change your idea of what is an acceptable body type by looking at the people around you,” dr. christakis said.
the investigators say their findings can help explain why americans have become fatter in recent years---- each person who became obese was likely to drag along some friends.
their analysis was unique, dr. christakis said, because it moved beyond a simple analysis of one person and his or her (4)social contacts and instead examined an entire social network at once, looking at how a person’s friend’s friends, or a spouse’s sibling’s friends, could have an influence on a person’s weight.
the effects, he said, “highlight the importance of a spreading process, a kind of (5)social contagion, that spreads through the network.”
of course, the investigators say, social networks are not the only factors that affect body weight. there is a strong genetic component at work, too.
science has shown that individuals have genetically determined ranges of weights, spanning perhaps 30 or so pounds for each person. but that leaves a large role for the environment in determining whether a person’s weight is near the top of his or her range or near the bottom. as people have gotten fatter, it appears that many are edging toward the top of their ranges. the question has been why.
if the new research is correct, it may say that something in the environment seeded what some call an obesity epidemic, making a few people gain weight. then, (5)social networks let the obesity spread rapidly.

who (doesn’t) let the dogs bark?(a)

for the past year, cornelia czarnecki said, the barking of her neighbor’s german shepherd has awakened her repeatedly at 4 a.m. the dog often barks for hours at a time, said mrs. czarnecki, a clifton resident.
"that dog is out there barking day and night, and we don’t know what to do anymore," she said.
(1)mrs. czarnecki became so upset about the dog that she filed a municipal complaint against him under the town’s general noise ordinance. the case is set to be heard in municipal court on august 6. (3\a)complaints like the ones mrs. czarnecki lodged with the police and city officials led the clifton city council to draft an ordinance that could result in fines for residents whose dogs are "barking, howling, crying" or making any other loud noises for more than 30 minutes in an hour. "i can’t wait," mrs. czarnecki said. the council took up the ordinance for a first reading on tuesday; a final vote is scheduled on august 8.
(2)"it’s a quality of life issue," said councilman frank c. fusco, who introduced the measure. (3\b)clifton is far from alone in seeking to silence noisy dogs. at least 144 of new jersey’s municipalities have laws that address whining and barking, according to a municipal ordinance database online at www.generalcode.com.
in new york, at least 30 towns in nassau and suffolk counties have similar laws, as do about 25 towns in westchester county. connecticut has a statewide law barring dogs that are a "nuisance" because of "excessive barking or other disturbance."
many of the ordinances in the region are general prohibitions against excessive whining or barking. in westchester, the city of new rochelle ran into trouble with its law in 1997 after a resident challenged a citation. (3\c)a city judge ruled that the ordinance was unconstitutionally vague because it did not include details about time of day and duration of barking, and the city changed the law in 1998.
"many of these ordinances go back to the 1800s," said the new rochelle corporation counsel, bernis shapiro. "they’re just carried forward and they don’t get changed until an issue comes up."
in may 2006, hillsborough township in somerset county passed an ordinance to specifically address barking, but no complaints have been filed since then, said lt. bill geary of the hillsborough police department. other new jersey towns, including bloomsbury in hunterdon county and manville in somerset, considered such ordinances but withdrew them after residents complained that they would be unenforceable.
as for those who contend that a barking dog should be a low priority, councilman fusco said, "if the dog was next to your house, you’d sing a different song."
mr. fusco said he was confident that the ordinance proposed in clifton would be supported by his fellow council members. at the same time, he knows that some residents may object.
but david axelrod, a groomer at furrs n purrs on valley road, said he did not think the measure was tough enough.
"thirty minutes is extremely generous," he said. "there is no reason why a dog should be barking that long."
the ordinance says barking must be sustained to be illegal, and it bans excessive barking only from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
under the ordinance, a, resident complains to the city health department, which sends a warning note. if the barking continues, the resident takes the complaint to municipal court, where fines can start at $250. before a court date, the city would most likely try to resolve the matter through mediation, said the city attorney, matthew t. priore.
last year about a dozen warning letters were sent to residents about their barking dogs, clifton officials said.
(3\d)currently, residents can complain about barking under the city’s general noise ordinance, but they have to essentially prosecute the case in municipal court themselves, mr. fusco said. (4)under the proposed ordinance, residents would appear as a witness in a case presented by the municipal prosecutor.
"the new ordinance has some bite to it," mr. fusco said. eric m. zwerling, director of the rutgers university noise technical assistance center, trains police Officers on noise complaints and writes municipal noise codes.
"one of the things i say to the officers i train is that if people were fundamentally civil to each other, we’d all be out of work," he said.
(5)mr. zwerling, the owner of a chocolate labrador named bosco, said he had his own appreciation of the barking problem.
"a dog is barking for one of two reasons -- either it needs attention or it is trying to alert you to something," he said. "in either case, you should be attending to it."
