I thought the gimmick of flaps would work very well for learning about the body because you could peal back the layers and see the position of organs and how that relates to each other... this is the sole reason i got the book. So I was disappointed upon receiving the book and here is why:
First, the majority of the flaps just reveal facts and were not necessarily peering into the layers of the body... the facts are good and do teach a lot, but its not what I was lead to believe the book contained. The book's title is "look inside your body" so that is what i wanted.
Second, i thought the front cover was showing you some of the flaps in the book... and i really liked the hand shaped one that could flip over to see the bones.... but there are no hand-shaped, organ-shaped, or body shaped flaps in the book. So the cover again was a tad misleading.
Third, there is a lack of proper science terms throughout the book. The esophagus should be labeled as such with parentheses under it stating "windpipe" that way kids learn real terms and their common names/functions. The drawings of organ systems could hardly be called diagrams given how little was labeled. They could have labeled far more on nearly every page. The more science words kids are exposed to, the better they will do later on in difficult science courses because they know the vocab already so just have to focus on learning the hard concepts. Overall lack of labeling in the book makes me question its value/worth.
Fourth, I thought each organ system (or organ system pair like cardiovascular and respiratory presented as a layer) would have a 2-page spread and hit all of the basics... but the digestive system was the ONLY system with a two page spread with layering flaps to see inside organs. Instead, the integumentary system (skin) has only 1/4 of a page with hardly any facts plus one flap in the senses section on nerve endings and a few facts on the inside of the back cover... the book did not even state the skin's purposes. The urinary system has one flap that hardly shows what is going on, the reproductive system has one flap and does not even have a flap to see the baby in the tummy, the lymphatic and endocrine systems are not even mentioned when one flap each would have sufficed, and the immune system is just a single flap if you count the germs one. Cardiovascular and respiratory systems were side by side and did not show layering. The same with the muscular and skeletal systems though they had flaps in the front of the book to show some layering. There were two pages on the nervous system (senses are included) but still managed to not cover basics like reflexes. The sense of taste only deals with sour, sweet, salty, and bitter... when umami the taste of protein is pretty significant. The last page and inside of the cover have a number of random facts about daily life and growing up but do not even cover the missing body systems.
For me, this book does introduce some concepts about the human body... but you would have to spend so much time supplementing knowledge that I just don't think the book is worth it in the end. The gimmick of using flaps was not used to its best advantage. Overall its only at a pre-school level book that has to be read with a parent to explain everything and fill in gaps... and make sure the kid does not rip the flaps off.... Any kid over the age of 4 should be learning more vocab than this so its best to get a different book. I really wanted to like this book but it just did not meet what I wanted it to.
This book is top notch! It has tons of information about the body, an excellent conversation starter, no matter the age. My 4 year old is learning more and more about science, the flaps make it interesting. This book has great illustrations and the info is presented in short chunks, which is good for little ones with short attention spans. You determine how easy or hard to keep the info, sure to use this book over and over, I'm guessing until 2nd grade? One of our best book purchases.
My 4-yo girl "reads" this book over and over and over again. She really loves the multiple windows that show up how our body works.
It's very informative, with LOTS of facts, but you don't have to read it all. Depending by the age of your kid, this can be read, or "talked" about. The little windows are very easy to understand even by a 4-yo kid by himself just browsing it alone.
Very well done, and sturdy too!
Well, I ordered this for Christmas and it didn't arrive until January 20th. It would have been helpful to know this was coming from the UK. I have not given it to the family that requested it for their children yet. I looked through it and consider it a good learning tool as well and will get it to them soon.
My 4 year old daughter absolutely loves this book. It's interesting, interactive and keeps us busy with all the flaps. It is definitely informative and a good introduction to the Human Body. I know as she gets older her appreciation for the book will grow too. I can't wait to share more Usborne Books with her.
