This text book is well written and easy to follow. Wish more were like it.
This book literally fell into peices as soon as I opened it, and I heard reports of the same from classmates.
Book in bad Condition
This book is required for my soils class and it was a good help in understanding soil concepts. The delivery was perfect.
I am a professor at a large university, teaching in a 2-year program in Construction Management. I have been using this text for over 25 years (several editions, obviously), and it is the best I have found for a non-calculus based curriculum. The writing is clear, and topics are mostly logically laid out, there are lots of good examples, and the chapter homeworks are great. Lots of good diagrams and photos, although the photos are poor quality B&W, nothing color. I have looked at every other option in this discipline for something better, but so far this is still my best choice. That being said...
I believe the author is either retired and/or deceased, as this book has not been updated since 2007, and the publisher rep tells me there are no plans to revise it again, it's at the end of the line. It is no longer available in hard cover, only very flimsy paperback, on thin paper. The binding is VERY POOR and the book falls apart, they do not last an entire semester. I feel terrible asking my students to pay sometimes $100+ for this book, knowing they will not be able to sell it back as it will be falling apart. But, like I say, I can't find anything that is a suitable replacement. The cover is falling off my personal hard cover copy, but I know I'll likely never be able to get another one.
There are also many errors in this book, mostly in the homework solutions and answers. Fortunately I have found most of them by now, so I can tell my students the corrected answers and solutions. But, I know they will never be corrected, which is also very disturbing for such an expensive textbook.
I wish I had the time and expertise to update this book or write a replacement. I wish someone else would...
