This is a monumental and indeed great book on Holmes. But, and for me it is a big one, the relentless comparison of Victorian and modern attitudes to diversity had me gagging. If I wanted to read about moral superiority I would have read about it. I wanted to study Holmes and his era without little lessons in racism and white superiority. Great book so gave it 4 stars but should have been 5 if only they had presented without social commentary rooted in modern political correctness.
