if you need a review this is it. nice and straightforward
One of the best math books i've ever owned.
I did fairly well at math in high school, picking up concepts fairly easy and doing well on tests and exams. I was a history major in college, however, and that didn't require a lot of math. But, while it's not like riding a bike or driving a stick, learning math again after quite a number of years comes easier. I understand how to approach the topic, I just forget some of the techniques and approaches.
That's where this book comes in. It's a math book for adults who need a refresher. Very straightforward, with no comic boxes, big color diagrams, or shockingly inflated price. It is very clear and succinct, with short lessons followed my short drills (about 10 questions each). It goes in an orderly fashion, starting with the basics of arithmetic and division, then pressing on to exponents, fractions, decimals, equations, quadratic equations, inequalities and absolute values, word problems, and ending with geometry. If I remember right this covers about up through Algebra II or College Algebra with the long chapter on geometry at the end getting you all the basics. This book doesn't woo you through, it's certainly very business-like, requiring discipline. But if you sit down with it each day you'll make steady progress, rebuild your math skills and have substantive prep for the GMAT or whatever foundational math test or needs you might have. Honestly it's also really good for advanced younger students or if you're just wanting to sharpen the old brain again. For the price, this is a really good deal compared to a lot of other test prep books and math books, covering a huge amount of ground in an straightforward way.
This is a great math review for the GMAT or any big test. It breaks down math into ten sections - arithmetic, divisibility, exponents and roots, fractions, fractions decimals percents and ratios, equations, quadratic equations, inequalities and absolute value, word problems, and geometry. Each of these sections has pages explaining the concepts, followed by drill sets. The drill sets are around forty or fifty questions to hammer through and make sure you learned the concepts correctly. The end of the book has a glossary of mathematical terms, which is a handy reference, especially if it's been awhile since you've used math terminology.
I think this is a good refresher to see what you know and what you need to work on. It's quick to get through each section and you can see where you stand on each of the math subjects. There's also more practice online. The inside back cover has a little scratch of section, like a lottery ticket, and gives you a code to set up an online account and get more problems. Overall, I think this is a great resource to prepare for the GMAT.
It's been a long while since I studied math, although my work requires that I frequently use simple operations (including arithmetic, division, fractions, decimals, equations and word problems, roughly half the stuff covered here). This book is good for anyone preparing for the Graduate Record Exams, however, as it also covers exponents, quadratic equations, inequalities and absolute values and geometry---not the kind of stuff most commonly used in my everyday profession, anyway.
While I'm not personally taking the GREs, I figured it might be fun to review math skills I haven't used in a while. When Amazon Vine offered, I sprang for it.
I am very glad I did. This is a terrific review mechanism and is also bound to be a great tool for any up-and-coming graduate entrance-exam-takers in the family in the next few years.
