Well this book will get you up and running, but in no way will it allow you to set up a web server for use to host multiple domains, users and e-mail. Fox example, there is no coverage of setting up Postfix and Dovecot to work with virtual domains and e-mail accounts through mysql or how to add a web based e-mail interface to your Postfix/Dovecot/mysql e-mail system. If you are hosting your own DNS, the author spends a lot of time on a caching DNS server in addition to BIND, and I found that I removed this to better fit my needs. I think it is very good as far as a framework to set up your server, especially if you want to avoid a "canned" web panel from a third party and learn how to run a web server from the command line interface. So if you use this book, just be aware that you will run into situations for your needs not covered in the book and then will have to rely on your experience or Google search for the solution to what you want to accomplish to meet your goals. But you will learn to be competent at the command line interface and understand the locations of configuration files and how to save and edit them to fit your needs.

This is the book I have been looking for. It walks you through step by step from installation to having a complete server up and running. Other books tend to show you the technical use of the commands but don't apply the use to specifically setting up a server. Well written and easy to understand. This book will get new CentOS users up and running with a basic linux server while providing useful information for those that already have a better understanding of Linux servers. Great book!

1. Value: 1* The text is hardly 300 pages of large, double or triple spaced print, that reads better than it helps cook up some services.

2. Attention to Detail: 1* The author frequently resorts to brevity in spots where more explanation is needed; an example is the author routinely leaves off syntax in commands, scripts, and configuration files. The text is riddled with typos and poor use of the English language.

3. Target Audience: 1*. There is a difference between writing a tutorial for a specific audience, and writing a book targeted at a variety of audiences. This book is hardly esoteric or for seasoned pros; likewise, no newbie is getting very far with it, either. I am certainly somewhere in between, and had to return the book. I could not justify keeping it for a reference or for any real use, and would not have bought it had I had a proper preview in a physical bookstore.

4. Organization: 1*. The book is poorly organized. It attempts to make the reader feel like the installation to configuration to deployment process is going to be smooth. Hardly. More pages were spent discussing the finer points of time zones and network time settings than on host configuration.

5. Availability: 5*. I am very happy to be able to find any texts on this great operating system, and even happier for a somewhat current edition (the new one comes out in a few weeks). I just wish it were a good resource for reference / doing things with the OS.

This is a great cookbook, aimed at sys-admins and developers alike. The first section details installation in detail, including remote installations and boot loader configuration. With a focus on maintaining a robust Centos, the book moves on to configuration and kernel management. This is rarely covered in cookbooks and is a great addition to this book.
All throughout the book, the authors focus on the particularities of Centos, as opposed to writing about Linux generically. Most of us use Centos for security reasons, and this book discusses how to maintain a secure system, including package management, secure file transfers, and HTTP certificate management.
Networking and interoperability are well covered as they are essential in today's heterogenous computing systems.
App-level functions such as web-services and database installation and management are also covered.
I appreciated the chapter on Docker and the chapter on monitoring.
Overall, a great resource to help you set up a Centos system.

Really a great book! It explains the impact of systemd to the new CentOS 7 release.
The examples like wordpress in a docker container are chosen well and introduces the usage of CentOS in a daily work of a sysadmin. Each command on the console is deeply described and easy to understand.
It is written nicely and one of the books i will take to my next vacation ;)
