Jntroduction
IDDLE-EARTH WAS A LAND OF CONFlICT. In every sense, it was a world shaped and defined by the eternal struggle between good and evil. Its mountains, seas, cities and plains were literally carved by eons of war between these opposing forces, and every race or culture that inhabited the world was characterised by the part they played. Each was an embodiment of some element of the battle of ideologies that had wrought and unmade Middle-earth time and again over the ages.
Men, of all the races of Middle-earth, were closest in spirit to the centre of the conflict, for Men possessed at once the greatest predisposition toward acts of both greatness and darkness at the same time. Men's hearts were fickle and fragile things. The wills of Men could be swayed by pride, vengeance, greed and love. For Men the wars of Middle-earth were not for land or power so much as for redemption. They sought to rise above them-selves, to conquer their own base nature and prove themselves something greater and nobler, above temptation and human weakness.
Time and again Men failed before the face of temptation, but time and again they crawled back to redeem themselves with acts of valour and purity of heart. So it was with Isildur at Orodruin, who succumbed to the lure of the Ring, only to be succeeded by Aragorn, who restored the pride of Gondor. So it was also with Boromir, who fell in to evil, but was saved by his valour before the end.Men fought to prove themsclves worthy of their honour, and to conquer not only the evil without, but that which lay within.
For Elves, the wars of Middle-earth were different. The Elves were perhaps the closest of all raccs to being incorruptible, though even they could fall.
