The ideas of forming an organization to help the sick andwounded during a war started with Jean Henri Dunant.In1 859，he observed how people were suffering on a battlefieldin Italy.He wanted to help all the wounded people，paying noattention to which side they were fighting for.The mostimportant result of his work was an international treatycalled the Geneva Convention（公约）.It protects prisonersof war，the sick and the wounded，as well as other citizensduring a war.
The American Red Cross was Set up by Clara Barton in1 88 1.Today the Red Cross in the world provides a number ofservices for the public，such as helping people in need，teaching first aid，explaining water safety，artificial respirationand providing blood.
