Professor Terry Brown graduated from Queen Elizabeth College, London with a BSc Hons in Microbiology in 1974, and from University College London with a PhD in 1977. He joined the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology as a postdoctoral researcher in 1981, and has remained in Manchester ever since, becoming the UK's first Professor of Biomolecular Archaeology in 2000. He was Head of Biomolecular Sciences from 2002–2004 and has been Associate Dean in Life Sciences since 2004.
Terry Brown has been active in genomics and biomolecular archaeology since 1989. He is particularly interested in the origins and spread of agriculture and has published a number of research papers that describe how examination of the genomes of wheat and maize can provide information on the history of cultivation of these crops.
Terry has a strong commitment to the public understanding of science. As well as being the author of eight text books he has also given talks to groups as diverse as the British Association for the Advancement of Science and local Women's Institutes.
Professor Browns strengths include the clarity of his writing and the ability to not unnecessarily complicate the material. - Ted Lee, SUNY Fredonia, USA
The book is well written and the order of topics is logical. - Bart Eggen, Groningen, Holland
Genomes 2 is one of my favourite molecular biology textbooks. I have been researching and teaching molecular biology for the last 20 years. I recommend Genomes to my undergraduate students as the first choice...[I] switched to Genomes for the clear, concise and simplified explanations that can sometimes be complicated concepts. Student feedback was very encouraging with regard to the book. - Amal Shervington, University of Central Lancashire, UK
I like the approach and overall layout of the book and the reviewed chapters. Good use is made of figures and information boxes. - Matthew Upton, manchester University, UK
I went through looking for things that could be left out, and it was really hard because the content is well chosen and up to date. - Andrew Read, Manchester University, UK
It was a great pleasure to read Part 3. I think that most important subjects are covered very well and in a very easily readable way. I think it is a very good idea to start every chapter by stating the Learning Outcomes. The students are very often asking for that from the teachers here. - Torsten Kristensen, Aarhus University, Denmark
I found the statement of learning outcomes at the beginning of these chapters to be of great use providing a mental structure for the material that was presented. The overall presentation was clear, the use of figures was appropriate and the additional boxes provided further material without disrupting the flow of information in the main body of the text. - Adrian Hall, Sheffield Hallam University, UK
The good news is that the book looks great. Terry writes very well. - Robert Slater, University of Hertfordshire, UK
Terry Brown’s Genomes 3…everything from the index to page numbers to colour figures is fully accessible. Certainly, for any biology student interested in molecular genetics, Brown cuts the mustard. - The Times Higher Education Supplement, February 23rd 2007
