Like many other countries, China faces an aging society. Unlike the other nations, however, China's huge population presents unique challenges. Currently, the country has 144 million people 60 years of age and above, or 11 percent of the total population; that is expected to rise to 437 million, or nearly on third of the population, by 2050. Against this backdrop, a well-funded pension and healthcare system for seniors is far from a reality. The government recently issued a white paper on measures that are being considered to ease the situation. Experts warn that while there still is time to devise a solution, urgent action is needed to avoid major problems in the future.
