An exotic religion, Buddhism started in India, whereas it gained wider popularity in China.As soon as it was first brought into China, Buddhism began to clash with the native Chinese religions and traditional cultures. Finally they became accustomed to each other, with Buddhism domesticated over a long period of time into a new-style Buddhism-Chinese Buddhism. After that, the altered religion started its journey from China and spread across East Asia, Southeast Asia and eventually all parts of the world.
With the Wutai Mountain as a leading representative, a lot of famous mountains and temples in Shanxi have made the bases of the Chinese Buddhism for good and assumed an important position in the history of Chinese Buddhism.

以大白塔最为引人注目，文殊发塔则极具传奇色彩。
大白塔是寺内主体建筑，全称“护国佑民释迦文佛真身舍利宝塔”，亦称“大慈延寿宝塔”。相传释迦佛涅椠之后，得八万四千舍利子，在中国者十又九粒，各建一塔以祀之，此塔乃十九塔之一。塔通高56.4米，外涂白垩，洁白如玉，故俗称“大白塔”。塔基用青砖砌筑，平面呈方形，周嵌碑碣，形成碑垣，在塔基平座上周施勾栏，座南内收，形成小佛殿。自塔西基座上的楼廊梯道拾级而上，可人殿内，并可绕塔周览。塔底层外围筑单檐挑角回廊三十三间，内置木制铁皮法轮108个，上书藏文经、咒，可供僧侣、香客、游人旋转和诵读。底层正面砌窑洞三孔，中为熏塔之所，以防虫鸟入居。东侧窑内有“佛足碑”。台基四隅各建一亭，均为单檐六角攒尖顶。
塔座之上连筑两层束腰须弥座，第一层南北两面各镶嵌铜佛像4尊，东西两面各镶嵌铜佛像3尊，共14尊，高度、大小不同，姿态、造型各异。第二层束腰四面各镶嵌铜镜4枚，共16枚。
